To Text or not to Text?

The holiday season is here and while we are all glad that 2020 will soon come to an end, I can’t help but think how for some people, 2020 was a picnic compared to going through the holidays. As these thoughts ran through my head, I thought of how awkward it can sometimes be to bring up a subject that you are hoping someone is not thinking about. But you know you should ask, “Are you ok?”

So, what do we do? Is sending that text enough? Is it ok to replace the warmth of our voice, the gentleness of our touch, and the kindness of our expression with a quick typing of 3 words? Not judging – I do it too. But in the spirit of thinking deep, I thought I would express some possibilities and maybe others have insight to share.

Are we so busy that we don’t have time to pick up the phone? (A friend of mine says you make time for what’s important…ouch). Are we so busy that we don’t answer a call from a friend? Maybe some are not ready to talk, so answering a text is an easy way out. Is that enough? Are we using our smart phones to shoot quick typed questions and answers while not getting anywhere in our relationships? If we don’t bother to pick up the phone when we sense someone might need us, then what does it take for us to actually communicate.

Is a text really enough?
